I’m Emily, an archaeologist and community engagement specialist, with a background in education, public outreach, and research. I am passionate about finding new ways to engage with the public and bring archaeology to wider audiences.
I have a PhD in Community Engagement in Development-funded Archaeology and I founded Archaeo-Logic to allow me to build on my doctoral research into community engagement and apply it within the archaeology and heritage sector.
At Archaeo-Logic, I specialise in community and public archaeology, providing tailored consultancy services to meet the unique needs of my clients. I believe in the power of archaeology to enrich communities, promote cultural heritage and generate community values. My approach combines innovative strategies with a passion for education, ensuring that every project not only meets professional standards but also inspires and engages the public in meaningful ways.
Mission: To make archaeology accessible for a wide audience through meaningful engagement, connecting people to the past in ways that matter today.
Vision: I envisage an archaeology sector where engagement is not an afterthought, but embedded within every stage of research, interpretation and practice.
Values: I believe archaeology should be accessible, collaborative and creative – rooted in ethical practice and shaped through dialogue. Every project I take on is guided by a commitment to meaningful engagement, critical reflection and the belief that heritage can inspire connection.

I’m Dr Emily Johnston, and I am a community engagement specialist.
I have recently successfully defended a PhD which researched community engagement in development-funded archaeology in Scotland. As part of my doctoral research, I created Outreach in Scottish Archaeology (www.outreachscotarch.org) which collates data on community archaeology practices.
I am a skilled archaeologist, having worked on research excavations in Italy and in commercial archaeology in the UK. I also have experience in working in Education (including Primary education and Higher Education), heritage tourism and outreach roles.
